06.28.08 Gianmarco Raimondo and Team Autotecnica at CHIN Picnic June 26, 2008 - St. Catharines, Ontario – Seventeen-year-old race driver Gianmarco Raimondo will be on hand this weekend at the annual CHIN Picnic held at Exhibition Place in Toronto. Members of Gianmarco's race team, Team Autotecnica, will also be on hand along with the Formula BMW FB02 race car that he Gianmarco drives in the Formula BMW Americas series. Gianmarco, in his first year in the series, currently leads the rookie championship. He was also the first rookie in series history to record wins in the first two races of the season, a feat he accomplished at the famed Laguna Seca Raceway in Monterey, California last month. An ambassador of the sport and for the series, the St. Catharines, Ontario teen was selected earlier this year as a member of the Formula BMW Junior Driver program. This development program teaches young drivers fitness training, race craft, how to deal with the media and even covers items such as nutrition to keep them in top form for this demanding sport. Gianmarco travels extensively across North America to compete in the 17-race series which also makes stops in Montreal and Sao Paulo, Brazil as part of the Formula 1 Grand Prix events. n addition to this hectic schedule, Gianmarco also likes to get close to the fans. He looks forward to opportunities such as attending the famous CHIN PIcnic where he can talk about auto racing - a favourite past-time for many of his fellow countrymen, enjoy some great food and take in the sights. Of course some of the more enjoyable sights for Gianmarco will be during the Miss CHIN Bikini contest on Saturday afternoon. The CHIN Picnic starts this weekend, June 28 & 29 at The Canadian National Exhibition grounds in Toronto starting at 12:00 p.m. each day. The event wraps up on Tuesday, July 1. Driver Facts: Seventeen-year-old Gianmarco Raimondo is a 2008 Formula BMW Americas Junior. A graduate of the Sunoco Ron Fellows Karting Championship (SRFKC) where he raced Intercontinental C (ICC) shifter karts, He also raced in the Stars of Karting series with Hamilton, Ontario-based Cameron Motorsports. At the end of the 2007 racing season, Gianmarco was awarded a scholarship by SRFKC to compete in the Skip Barber Southern Region Championship where he scored a podium result in a race at Sebring in January of this year. He now races with Team Autotecnica in the Formula BMW Americas series. Gianmarco receives support from Lakeshore Cardiology and Level Ten Communications. Gianmarco is know by his friends and fellow races as GMo (pronounced gee-mo) Team Facts: Team Autotecnica has been in the Formula BMW Americas series since its inception in 2004 (then called Formula BMW USA). The team has recorded a number of wins and podium results in that time. Autotecnica won the series championship in 2005 with rookie driver Richard Phillipe. In 2007 the team recorded a record nine pole positions with rookie driver Esteban Gutierrez. The team also collected the rookie championship in 2007 with Gutierrez.
